At MerseyPest we provide commercial agreements for shops and restaurants.

In the agreements we carry out regular visits to monitor for pests. Different monitor points are used to check for different species of pests.

In the picture a large external box is shown that is used to monitor for rats. It is normally placed in yard areas. In this case it is getting placed internally in a store area that is poorly proofed and has holes that could let rats in. The customer is in the process of getting the holes fixed now they have been alerted to the problem.

The tray of small triangular blue baits is a tray used for internal tamper resistant boxes used for mice. These will be placed around the shop to ensure no part of the site is missed.

If you own a shop in Liverpool or surrounding areas and wish to have a commercial agreement set in place please phone to get a quote.

Fruit Fly Clouds in the Pub

November 5, 2015 by MERSEYPEST Leave a Comment

A pub in Liverpool called us out to deal with clouds of fruit flies. As with most fly species the success of a treatment depends on eliminating the breeding site of the fly.

In this case the fruit fly are enjoying the build up of drips that are rolling down the beer lines and forming sticky pools in and around the lines. The staff of the pub clean it often but can’t quite get in to all the areas.

We can easily get in with the steam cleaner to blast the gunk out. It is entirely spick and span when we’ve finished. We then treat it with insecticide just for good measure.

A final part of the treatment is to use a fumigant to knock down all the adult flies that are infesting the pub.

East Kilbride Bugs

September 25, 2015 by MERSEYPEST Leave a Comment

Residents in an East Kilbride tower block are in shock after discovering bugs have infested their homes.

Some living in White Cart Tower in St Leonards have seen insects crawling around their homes.

Now posters have appeared around the building as South Lanarkshire Council urge worried residents to call the Environmental Health Officer.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, found the pests in his flat and was angered that they had not been made aware of the situation until spotting the posters.

He described the insects as about one inch long and a bit like silverfish, but without the antenna.

He said: “So far I’ve killed about 20 of them. I couldn’t work out where they were coming from, we thought that a bit of food had fallen under the fridge or down the back of the cooker.

“My wife and I pulled the kitchen apart, and it was clean, but they kept appearing.

“It was only when I saw a poster the council put up that I realised that it wasn’t just our flat which was affected.

“I’m very angry that they didn’t tell us sooner. They will happily put letters through every door for trivial matters but for something like this they didn’t.

“I would like to know where these bugs are coming from and whether they are a danger to health.”

Annette Finnan, head of area services, housing and technical resources at South Lanarkshire Council, stated that, so far, two properties had been treated and that anyone in the block with concerns should get in touch.

She also noted that only if more reports emerge will further action be taken.

She said: “In August 2015, Environmental Services received two separate reports from residents within White Cart Tower of insects within their flats.

“One property was treated with a residual insecticide and the other, where only one insect had been found, Environmental Services gave advice to the occupier.

“Environmental Services are continuing to monitor the situation and will take further action if necessary.

“In the meantime, while this problem appears to be isolated, at the request of the local Tenants and White Cart Tower Residents Association, notices were placed within the Tower asking residents to report any similar problem directly to the council.”

Even the Celebrity Chef’s Struggle with Environmental Health, your not alone!!

September 12, 2015 by MERSEYPEST Leave a Comment

This is part of an article from The Independant yesterday. It shows how council inspectors target all food shops and restaurants regardless of their status. Read the full article here.

Celebrity chef disasters

Heston Blumenthal was forced to temporarily close Dinner, his exclusive Knightsbridge eaterie, after two diners and three staff went down with the norovirus winter vomiting bug, last year. Environmental health officers told staff at the double Michelin starred restaurant to wash their hands more often. The same bug hit the chef’s Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire in 2009.

Jamie Oliver’s exclusive butcher’s shop Barbecoa, near St Paul’s Cathedral, in London, had to temporarily close last year after inspectors found serious hygiene problems including mouse droppings, mould on carcasses and out-of-date wagyu beef. Barbecoa shut for 24 hours after public health officers scored it one out of five.

Two-star Michelin chef Marcus Wareing failed a routine hygiene inspection at his restaurant at London’s five-star Berkeley Hotel in 2013. Inspectors said pest control experts should be called in to control a “fly infestation”, warned of E.coli risks and told Wareing to buy a new vacuum-packing machine.

The Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, the chef’s flagship Birmingham restaurant, was given a “bad” rating for food hygiene and safety in 2014.

Middlesbrough takeaway closed due to mouse infestation

September 9, 2015 by MERSEYPEST Leave a Comment

An article from The Darlington and Stockton Times.

A MIDDLESBROUGH takeaway has been closed after a night-time inspection sparked mouse infestation and hygiene fears.

In an “extremely rare” move Zara’s, on Linthorpe Road, was closed immediately after environmental health officers visited it on Thursday, September 3.

During their visit the officers from Middlesbrough Council’s public protection service found evidence of mouse activity and poor standards of cleanliness.

On Monday (September 7), the council was granted a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order at Teesside Magistrates’ Court, confirming environmental health officer’s actions.

The business now has to stay closed until the council is satisfied that the health-risk conditions have been removed and the premises can be operated hygienically.

Environmental Health Manager Judith Hedgley said: “Food businesses have a legal duty to ensure their premises are free from pests and kept clean and hygienic.

“Failure to properly manage a premises can lead to pests and other conditions that can present a real risk to consumer safety.

“Environmental Health Officers inspect between 500 and 600 food businesses in Middlesbrough every year, and the hygiene standards in the vast majority of these are good.

“The closure of food businesses in Middlesbrough is extremely rare and this immediate action is carried out to protect consumers.

“Due to the conditions found on this occasion it was necessary to order the owner of Zara’s to close their business.

“Once the pest infestation has been removed and the premises thoroughly cleaned, the owner will be able to apply to the Council to reopen.

“Officers will continue to make regular visits to the premises to ensure there is no repeat of the condition found.”

Councillor Julia Rostron, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Adult Health and Social Care, said: “The Council’s Environmental Health Officers carry out important work to make sure the food we buy in Middlesbrough is safe to eat.

“The national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme recognises the hygiene standards achieved by most food outlets.

“Environmental Health Officers award a hygiene rating after every inspection and businesses are given a rating sticker to display on their premises.

“The vast majority of businesses in Middlesbrough have been awarded the highest ratings to make eating out a safe and enjoyable experience.

“Customers should look for the rating sticker before they buy food, or ask for it if they can’t see it.”

No one was available for comment when The Northern Echo called.

Walsall Business Closed Due to Pests

September 8, 2015 by MERSEYPEST Leave a Comment

A recent story about a shop closure due to pests. The story is from the Walsall Advertiser.

A CONVENIENCE store in Walsall was temporarily closed down by environmental health officers after they found evidence of mice activity.

Amid fears that mouse droppings found in food storage areas posed a serious risk to the public’s health, Warwaza Mini Market in Caldmore Green, Walsall was shut down last Monday afternoon (August 31).

Environmental health officers at Walsall Council served a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice on the owners and evidence gathered from the premises was presented at Walsall Magistrates Court on Thursday, September 3, where it was confirmed that the closure notice had been correctly served.

The owners of the business were also ordered to pay £350 costs.

Neil Harris, principal environmental health officer, said: “Rodents in any food premises is a serious issue. Mice spread germs which cause food poisoning as well as contaminating food with droppings and urine.

“All food businesses must be on their guard or they will face closure and hefty fines if they are taken to court.

“Food businesses shouldn’t wait until they see rodents in their businesses and should undertake regular checks under shelves and equipment to look for droppings, gnawed food and other signs of pest activity.

“This is especially important as the weather gets colder and rodents look for places indoors to nest”.

The premises remained closed for three days until officers were satisfied that the activity had been eradicated and the risk to customers had been removed.

The store is now open once again and environmental health officers say the owners have co-operated fully with the council throughout the process.

Birmingham Restaurant Closed Due to Cockroaches

September 4, 2015 by MERSEYPEST Leave a Comment

Another restaurant with no pest control and extremely poor hygiene is closed by the council in Birmingham. The article is from yesterdays Birmingham Mail. Read the story…

A Birmingham Chinese restaurant which was found to be ‘an imminent risk to public health’ after inspectors found it was infested with cockroaches.

The Village Café in Ladywell Walk, city centre, was instantly closed down by officers concerned at the proble

At Birmingham Magistrates court SMT Village Café Ltd was ordered to pay a total of almost £2,000.

Environmental health officers visited the Chinese takeaway restaurant on 21 July 21 last year, and, shocked at their findings, immediately got a a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice on the same day – forcing the owners to shut down.

The court heard that the owners stated it employed a pest control company to treat and control pests at the premises, but environmental health team said they found no evidence of this during their visit.

When officers returned to The Village Café two days later, they decided there was still an imminent risk to public health as cockroaches both adult and young were found in the kitchen.

Mark Croxford, Head of Environmental Health for Birmingham City Council, said: “People should be able to have confidence in the safety of the food served and cleanliness of any food business in Birmingham – regardless of whether it’s a takeaway or a posh restaurant.

“When officers found evidence of an active cockroach infestation throughout the kitchen at The Village Café on 21 July 2014, they closed it immediately on public health grounds.

“We want the city’s food businesses to thrive and as such our officers work closely with premises to ensure they achieve the necessary standards required to operate safely.”

SMT Village Café Ltd pleaded guilty of two offences under the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013 and was ordered to pay £1,000 in fines, £876 towards costs and a £100 victim surcharge.

Following the formal closure, the company signed a contract with a pest control firm to carry out treatment to control and eradicate cockroaches.

Officers allowed SMT Village Café Ltd to reopen its food business on July 24 after a second revisit, when they found the premises to be free of pests.

The food business was last inspected in March this year, when it regained its Food Standards Agency rating of 3, which means it is generally satisfactory.

Dundee Take Away Shops to be Targeted by EHO

September 2, 2015 by MERSEYPEST Leave a Comment

This is an article taken from the The Courier, Dundee. The Environmental Health Officers are taking a firm stance on poor hygiene standards. Pest Control is one of the many aspects of keeping a food establishment running smoothly.

“A proposed crackdown on dodgy fast-food restaurants will be a huge boost to Dundee, a city business chief has said.

Under new plans, almost 30% of late-night takeaways in the city could be given just four weeks to stop serving unhygienic food or face closure.

Alison Henderson, chairwoman of Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the move by council officers, which she believes will make the City of Discovery a more attractive place for tourists.

She said: “This is a good thing and hugely important. Food hygiene and health and safety is a really basic but key part in building a world-class hospitality and customer service. This is a really important part in building that reputation in the city.”

As part of the proposed crackdown, any business failing to meet rigorous cleanliness criteria will be quizzed by environment officers.

And if they fail to improve, the late-night eateries could face closure.

Last year, The Courier revealed that Dundee’s food businesses have the worst hygiene in Scotland.

Environment convener Craig Melville agreed with Ms Henderson that the proposed crackdown was important for the city.

“The health officers take these matters extremely seriously and rightly so,” he said. “It is a health and safety issue and if improvements are required they will recommend that.

“Establishments will have to adhere to the recommendations or go before the licensing committee and explain why. This is an example of officers working hard to help the people of Dundee.”

A total of 18 late-night caterers are currently on the council hit list of restaurants rated “improvement required”.

A report by council officers states: “If a food business falls short of the legal standard it is classified as ‘improvement required’.

“It is reported that 27% of late hours caterers are listed on the scheme as ‘improvement required’.

“It is recommended that a new condition be included on all late hours catering licences requiring that they achieve the FHIS pass standard within three months of the grant of the licence and that any whose rating subsequently becomes ‘improvement required’ should rectify all contraventions within one month and request a re-inspection by environmental health officers.

“On an ongoing basis any business not achieving the pass standard within three months of opening or being rated ‘improvement required’ will be reported to the committee to explain why the standard of hygiene has not improved.”

Councillors will be asked to consider the proposals at a meeting of the city’s licensing committee on Thursday.”
