Black Garden Ants – Lasius niger
Black Garden Ants are a common sight in the garden during the warmer months in Britain. Their colonies can number over 10,000 workers but 4,000–7,000 is around average. A queen ant can live for around 12 years but normally an ant nest will only survive for around 4 years.
Black garden ants will explore their surroundings extensively during the early summer months. Often leading them indoors to find food. This is where ants become a problem and a control solution needs to be found. Mating flights of black ants usually occur between July and August. The winged adults at this time will erupt from their nests and fill the skies.
Often if the nests are against walls the flying ants will emerge inside buildings.
Ants can be controlled using either baits or with insecticidal sprays and dusts. The method of control depends on the infestation. Ants that are foraging into a house for food can be treated using baits. This is where bait stations are laid out in the ants path and the ants will take the bait back to the nest which will kill the ant nest. This process can take a couple of days but uses less chemicals.
Insecticidal dusts and sprays are used when a control is required instantly. The spray is directly applied to the ants and ant nest. In some cases both baits and contact insecticides are used.
