Mus musculus

The house mouse is a small grey rodent. They have an adult body length of 7–10 cm with a tail length of 5–10 cm.

All mice species have chisel like teeth that grow from the base and need to gnaw hard objects daily to keep them short and sharp. Mice are mainly nocturnal. They are extremely active for around 12 hours a day. They sleep or rest for the remaining hours in areas well away from predators and humans. The rodents often nest in cavity walls, under floorboards or in roof spaces. They are nocturnal and can be heard in the walls and ceilings in the night.

Mice living in a house can breed throughout the year and will not hibernate. The gestation period of a female mouse is about 20 days, and they give birth to a litter of 5-9 young. One female can have 5 to 10 litters per year, so the mice population can increase rapidly. Males reach sexual maturity at about eight weeks and females at about six weeks, but both can breed as early as five weeks.

Mice generally live in small social groups with one dominant male and a number of females and young. They establish a territory with multiple runs going under the floors and through the cavity walls. As young males mature they are pushed away from the territory of the dominant male. The young male will try to establish his own territory and attract his own females or will challenge a dominant male for his territory and females. An infestation can rapidly grow from a pair of mice to numerous family groups defending their own territories.

At MerseyPest we pride ourselves on being able to find the source of infestation and to deal with it rapidly. To control mice it is important to carry out a thorough investigation. We perform this using high tech inspection cameras and tools. A variety of techniques are used to control the mice. Most commonly used are traps and baits.

A 2 visit mouse control treatment is £120
