Cockroaches

Cockroaches Liverpool, Wirral, Warrington and Chester.

There are 3 pest species of cockroaches in the UK;

Common/Oriental cockroach – Blatta orientallis

German cockroach – Blattella germanic

American cockroach – Periplaneta americana

Cockroaches are not as common a pest as they used to be. They are still however found relatively commonly in Liverpool. They are nocturnal and eat almost any organic matter. They can be treated for by either using baits or by using contact insecticides such as sprays and dust.

Cockroach bait is placed in areas where the cockroaches feed or gather. They feed on the bait and return to where they rest in the day. They then die and are consumed by the other cockroaches. This in turn kills them, and others eat them and so on. Cockroach bait can be very effective but bait competition can sometimes be an issue. The area to be baited needs to entirely free of any other foods so the cockroaches mainly feed on the bait.

Treatments using contact insecticides (sprays and dust) need to be carried out extremely thoroughly. All cracks and crevices that the insect hide in need treating. This involves using residual insecticide sprays applied to all the cracks and crevices that the cockroach hide in. Insecticidal dust is blown into void areas, behind skirting boards and light switches.

Follow up visits are required due to the insects life cycle. These can be just to monitor but could involve retreatment if required. The cockroaches eggs are in protective cases that the insect hides deep in cracks and crevices. This often means that new cockroaches can emerge up to a month after the treatment. By this time the initial treatments residual properties can be much reduced and the infestation can break out again from a few new insects.
