Wasps

Wasps Liverpool, Wirral, Warrington and Chester

Vespula vulgaris

Wasps are a very common pest in Britain. They are a robust insect with a venomous sting.

They search the environment for insects to take back to the nest to feed to their young. The adults feed on nectar, soft fruit and a pulp that the young wasp grubs feed back to them. Wasp nests are built in hollow trees, old rodent holes and in the eaves of houses. The nest is made out of paper. It is made by chewing wood from dead trees and fences and mixing it with saliva to make the paper. The nest is built in combs.

Each wasp colony contains a single queen and in the UK only lasts for a single year. Most nests will die out by the end of November but nests commonly will last in to December. The only wasp to survive the Winter is the queen who will hibernate away from the nest until the next Spring. Queens start their new nests mid April. They start with around 30 eggs which the queen guards in her newly constructed nest. When these first few wasps hatch the queen can stop foraging for food and concentrate on reproduction. The nest grows in numbers throughout the spring and summer and can be as many as 10,000 individuals by the end of autumn.

Wasp nests are treated by using an insecticidal dust that is injected into the nest. If the nest is in a roof space it can be treated either from inside the roof void or from the outside using a lance or dust gun. Treating from the outside is a better option as the wasps are more contained and treatment is safer but the nest entrance hole must be identified. Treatment on the inside involves rupturing the back of the nest to inject the insecticide which means the wasps are released in to the roof space. Both treatment types cost £40. MERSEYPEST can provide rapid removal of wasps from any property in Liverpool and surrounding areas.

We charge £50 for a wasp nest treatment.

If there are further nests on site they can be treated at an added £20 per nest.

We offer a guaranteed service. In the rare case a treatment isn’t successful the first time we will retreat for free.
