Ants probably good for something…

April 19, 2019 by MERSEYPEST

Ants as horrible as they are in the home are actually very benificial insects in the garden. The British black garden ant is a scavenger insect in the garden. It clears up dead organic material and will also kill and eat pest insects that eat plants.

It’s unfortunate they have such a taste for sugar and find there way in to our homes. They are a fascinating social insect and live in colonies of many thousands. They are closely related to the bees and wasps which both also provide benificial garden services. One is a pollinator, the other a pest controller.

Before and After Haircut for our working Dog

April 13, 2019 by MERSEYPEST

Summer is definitely on its way if our shaggy working dog is in for his summer cut. I prefer him shaggy but a cut will keep him cool out when he’s working.

He has an air conditioned cage in the back of the van where he is cool and safe with his sister.

This is the poor dog looking slightly pampered but happy bullying the pet rodents in the shop beneath the groomers. Be good to get him back in the woods and mucky again!!

The dog is useful in flushing rats out of sheds and burrows but also is great in houses.

In a house he is able to find out where nests and high activity points are. He will often find a nest under floorboards upstairs which without the dog you would have very slim chance of finding.

Mason Bees

April 12, 2019 by MERSEYPEST

A customer sent in a few photos of mason bees for advice.

They were going in the weep holes of his windows to nest. They are often found in some numbers but are solitary bees meaning they act individually and each female bee is fertile and produces its own egg and young.

They use small gaps in mortar and brickwork to lay eggs. They will lay one at the bottom and place a pile of pollen next to it for the grub to eat when it hatches. They then put a small clay cap and repeat the process. There can be 7 or 8 eggs arranged down one hole.

As the bees are not protecting a queen they are non aggressive and can be carefully handled. They do have the ability to sting but the sting is very light and not especially painful.

Treatment for them is simple. Insecticide is put in to each hole the bees are going in.

The bees don’t cause any property damage so they can be left to complete their lifecycle. The adult bees are the only part which can be disconcerting for the homeowner and that part of the cycle is usually done within a few weeks.

Early Season News

April 4, 2019 by MERSEYPEST

The start of the season is definitely here. Early season insects have already been encountered. Lots of minor bees and the start of the bumblebees.

I’ve even had 2 calls for extremely early season wasps. The first was called in by a customer who stands at his back gate smoking and he could see the active queen coming and going from a hole in his roof. She will be feeding her first batch of young and increasing the nest size. A quick blast of dust removed it for the customer so it didn’t become a full sized nest.

Second was a customer who had an old nest in the roof space and didn’t want to remove it themself. After removing the old nest I had a quick look round and found a new nest with queen sitting next to it. It will have turned in to a large active next by the Summer. Good to get it done now.

The photo shows the small start of the season nest with a queen wasp sitting next to it.
