Its wasp season again and the nests are getting bigger!!

Wasps are social insects that build paper nests in hidden locations. They are a robust insect with a nasty sting used for capturing prey food items.

At this time in June the nests are still fairly small but as we go through the Summer months that can get quite large with populations in the many thousands per nest. We provide wasp removal in Liverpool and surrounding areas for £50.

This is a picture of a wasp nest in a shed. It was built behind a liner which has been pulled away exposing the nest inside. The nest is structured on a central spindle with layers containing the larvae in different stages of development. It was taken on the 23rd June to give an idea of size for the time of year.

Bee’s are a pollinating insect that are common in our gardens. They however can become a pest if they make a home in our houses.

Tree bees are a very common type of bumblebee that is often mistaken for wasps. They look small and black from a distance but on a closer look are actually orange and black. They often nest in bird boxes but are more of a concern when they nest in roof spaces.

Treatment for them is similar to wasps. From the outside they can be treated using a lance with insecticidal dust blown in. From the inside they can be treated with an aerosol insecticide.

Honey bee’s live in large colonies of many thousands of insects. They should be protected if possible as they are a beneficial insect that is a major pollinator of plants and crops. In some cases however they can’t be removed from properties and treatments can be carried out.

Other types of bees are in the environment. Mason and miner bees are also extremely common. They are both solitary bee’s but if a habitat is suitable they can appear in some numbers.

Bee’s are a beneficial insect and should be protected if possible but we do treat for bee’s if they are causing concern. Prices start from £60.

A good example to follow our previous post on noises in the roof space, this customer in Walton Liverpool, has had rats enter in to their extension roof. The area is well known for high rat activity. The council has been trying to get control of the waste issue in the alleys by implementing the use of Euro Bins. These have had a great effect and have reduced the dumping of black bags in alleys and therefore also reduced the number of potential food sources for rats. Im uncertain if they’ve also implemented a course of baiting either down the drains or on the railway embankment. Regardless the council should be praised for getting something done if somewhat slowly.

This customer hadn’t had any sightings of rats in or around there property for over 3 years. Hopefully the one that has chewed through now is a one off and wont become the norm again.

The roof space has been baited, as has the yard and the alleyway. A follow up visit will be carried out in 2 weeks to remove any dead rodents. The hole will be fixed and the length of the board will be fitted with a fine steel proofing mesh. This will prevent any further rat ingress through this area. The customer is also going to contact the council to make sure they have logged there is further rat activity in this area.

A customer today had issues with booklice. She’s recently moved in to a city centre apartment. All her possessions have been left in storage for 3 months. So it is possible the booklice have been in the storage unit and made their way in to the boxes. It is also possible they were in the apartment already especially if left empty for a long time.

Treatment is fairly simple a spray residual insecticide is applied to surfaces like the window sills, units etc. Then a smoke bomb is set off to knock down all the insects in the room. Smoke detectors have to be covered to prevent them setting the buildings fire alarms off. The building manager was also informed incase they went off even when covered.
