East Kilbride Bugs

September 25, 2015 by MERSEYPEST 145 Comments

Residents in an East Kilbride tower block are in shock after discovering bugs have infested their homes.

Some living in White Cart Tower in St Leonards have seen insects crawling around their homes.

Now posters have appeared around the building as South Lanarkshire Council urge worried residents to call the Environmental Health Officer.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, found the pests in his flat and was angered that they had not been made aware of the situation until spotting the posters.

He described the insects as about one inch long and a bit like silverfish, but without the antenna.

He said: “So far I’ve killed about 20 of them. I couldn’t work out where they were coming from, we thought that a bit of food had fallen under the fridge or down the back of the cooker.

“My wife and I pulled the kitchen apart, and it was clean, but they kept appearing.

“It was only when I saw a poster the council put up that I realised that it wasn’t just our flat which was affected.

“I’m very angry that they didn’t tell us sooner. They will happily put letters through every door for trivial matters but for something like this they didn’t.

“I would like to know where these bugs are coming from and whether they are a danger to health.”

Annette Finnan, head of area services, housing and technical resources at South Lanarkshire Council, stated that, so far, two properties had been treated and that anyone in the block with concerns should get in touch.

She also noted that only if more reports emerge will further action be taken.

She said: “In August 2015, Environmental Services received two separate reports from residents within White Cart Tower of insects within their flats.

“One property was treated with a residual insecticide and the other, where only one insect had been found, Environmental Services gave advice to the occupier.

“Environmental Services are continuing to monitor the situation and will take further action if necessary.

“In the meantime, while this problem appears to be isolated, at the request of the local Tenants and White Cart Tower Residents Association, notices were placed within the Tower asking residents to report any similar problem directly to the council.”

Fruit Fly Spray Liverpool

September 20, 2015 by MERSEYPEST 231 Comments

fruit fly spray pest control liverpool

Pest Control Liverpool – MerseyPest

A morning spray for fruit fly. Even the smallest drops of spilt liquids can create fruit fly infestations. They are particularly fond of wines, lagers and syrups. Common places in bars for infestation is under the lines. Small amounts of liquids trickle down the line to create drips. The drips form a crust and the flies breed inside the drip.

Early starts are the only way to get this type of job done.

Chemicals can’t be sprayed when staff or customers are in.

A Very Large and Explosive Nest in Seaforth

September 16, 2015 by MERSEYPEST 122 Comments

wasps going crazy pest control liverpool

When treating a wasp nest it is never known how explosive the reaction will be. Most nests will react strongly with a small number of extremely aggressive individuals. Some nests like this one literally explode with all the individuals highly aggressive.

It is probably due to factors such as ambient temperature and dust penetration/nest destruction.

If you ever attempt doing wasp nests yourself it is best to do them in the night time. Make sure you know exactly where the entrance hole is and treat using a dust. Wasps are cold in the night and don’t see well in the dark so there is practically no reaction.

If you wish to have us do it for you follow the links below.

Even the Celebrity Chef’s Struggle with Environmental Health, your not alone!!

September 12, 2015 by MERSEYPEST 104 Comments

This is part of an article from The Independant yesterday. It shows how council inspectors target all food shops and restaurants regardless of their status. Read the full article here.

Celebrity chef disasters

Heston Blumenthal was forced to temporarily close Dinner, his exclusive Knightsbridge eaterie, after two diners and three staff went down with the norovirus winter vomiting bug, last year. Environmental health officers told staff at the double Michelin starred restaurant to wash their hands more often. The same bug hit the chef’s Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire in 2009.

Jamie Oliver’s exclusive butcher’s shop Barbecoa, near St Paul’s Cathedral, in London, had to temporarily close last year after inspectors found serious hygiene problems including mouse droppings, mould on carcasses and out-of-date wagyu beef. Barbecoa shut for 24 hours after public health officers scored it one out of five.

Two-star Michelin chef Marcus Wareing failed a routine hygiene inspection at his restaurant at London’s five-star Berkeley Hotel in 2013. Inspectors said pest control experts should be called in to control a “fly infestation”, warned of E.coli risks and told Wareing to buy a new vacuum-packing machine.

The Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, the chef’s flagship Birmingham restaurant, was given a “bad” rating for food hygiene and safety in 2014.

Old Bird Proofing Failing

September 9, 2015 by MERSEYPEST 520 Comments

failed bird proofing pest control liverpool

Bird proofing is normally good for 20 plus years but this proofing has not lasted that long to due to being only spiked for the leading edge of the bay window. The rest of the window has had balled up chicken wire pushed in.

This has become compressed over time or possibly by the pigeons activity to become a suitable nesting site again.

On a bay window like this we strip off all the old proofing and spike the entire flat edge. This provides the pigeon no possible place to nest.

When we carry out our proofing work we always make sure we fully disinfect the area after the old proofing is removed. This kills all avian pathogens and parasites.

Bedbug Blood Spots

September 9, 2015 by MERSEYPEST 109 Comments

bedbug blood spots pest control liverpool

These are one of the most obvious signs that a property has bedbugs. They are spots of blood that are excreted by the adult bug as it reaches its harbourage after a blood feed. If you look closely you can see the cast shells of adult insects in the gap between the bed base and the slats.

Once you have identified bedbugs in your property it is advisable to get it professionally treated as self treatments can spread the problem.

Middlesbrough takeaway closed due to mouse infestation

September 9, 2015 by MERSEYPEST 186 Comments

An article from The Darlington and Stockton Times.

A MIDDLESBROUGH takeaway has been closed after a night-time inspection sparked mouse infestation and hygiene fears.

In an “extremely rare” move Zara’s, on Linthorpe Road, was closed immediately after environmental health officers visited it on Thursday, September 3.

During their visit the officers from Middlesbrough Council’s public protection service found evidence of mouse activity and poor standards of cleanliness.

On Monday (September 7), the council was granted a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order at Teesside Magistrates’ Court, confirming environmental health officer’s actions.

The business now has to stay closed until the council is satisfied that the health-risk conditions have been removed and the premises can be operated hygienically.

Environmental Health Manager Judith Hedgley said: “Food businesses have a legal duty to ensure their premises are free from pests and kept clean and hygienic.

“Failure to properly manage a premises can lead to pests and other conditions that can present a real risk to consumer safety.

“Environmental Health Officers inspect between 500 and 600 food businesses in Middlesbrough every year, and the hygiene standards in the vast majority of these are good.

“The closure of food businesses in Middlesbrough is extremely rare and this immediate action is carried out to protect consumers.

“Due to the conditions found on this occasion it was necessary to order the owner of Zara’s to close their business.

“Once the pest infestation has been removed and the premises thoroughly cleaned, the owner will be able to apply to the Council to reopen.

“Officers will continue to make regular visits to the premises to ensure there is no repeat of the condition found.”

Councillor Julia Rostron, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Adult Health and Social Care, said: “The Council’s Environmental Health Officers carry out important work to make sure the food we buy in Middlesbrough is safe to eat.

“The national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme recognises the hygiene standards achieved by most food outlets.

“Environmental Health Officers award a hygiene rating after every inspection and businesses are given a rating sticker to display on their premises.

“The vast majority of businesses in Middlesbrough have been awarded the highest ratings to make eating out a safe and enjoyable experience.

“Customers should look for the rating sticker before they buy food, or ask for it if they can’t see it.”

No one was available for comment when The Northern Echo called.
