Freshly Emerged Fly

March 15, 2019 by MERSEYPEST 4,097 Comments

This extremely brief video shows a freshly emerged fly from a rat carcass. The flies wings are not pumped full of fluid to make the wings look recognisable yet.

It can be seen more clearly in this photo how the wings are not yet formed.

Customers Flies

March 14, 2019 by MERSEYPEST 102 Comments

Customer Flies 1

A customer sent a few photos of a fly which has been making its presence known in his dining room.

Identification of fly species is critical in fly treatments to know how to go about treatment. For example drain flies require sewer lids lifting and jetting whereas cluster flies require the roof space fumigating with a fog. In this particular case the fly is a bluebottle.

Bluebottle larva feed on dead animal material. The treatment for bluebottles is to remove the breeding site of the flies which involves looking for the dead animal (if possible). This will involve taking the dog in to use his nose to find the offending object. Floorboards can sometimes be lifted to get them out.

If access can’t be gained a strong residual insecticide can be applied to stop the flies being so visible in the house.

Fruit Fly Clouds in the Pub

November 5, 2015 by MERSEYPEST 48 Comments

A pub in Liverpool called us out to deal with clouds of fruit flies. As with most fly species the success of a treatment depends on eliminating the breeding site of the fly.

In this case the fruit fly are enjoying the build up of drips that are rolling down the beer lines and forming sticky pools in and around the lines. The staff of the pub clean it often but can’t quite get in to all the areas.

We can easily get in with the steam cleaner to blast the gunk out. It is entirely spick and span when we’ve finished. We then treat it with insecticide just for good measure.

A final part of the treatment is to use a fumigant to knock down all the adult flies that are infesting the pub.

A customer with a severe fruitfly infestation called us in after she couldn’t find the source of the problem.

After the inspection we found the flies breeding site up in the extractor hood. The customer cooks soups for her business on her home hob causing a large amount of deposit on the extractor. When the deposit/fly breeding site was cleaned the problem was sorted.

Fruit Fly Spray Liverpool

September 20, 2015 by MERSEYPEST 176 Comments

Pest Control Liverpool – MerseyPest

A morning spray for fruit fly. Even the smallest drops of spilt liquids can create fruit fly infestations. They are particularly fond of wines, lagers and syrups. Common places in bars for infestation is under the lines. Small amounts of liquids trickle down the line to create drips. The drips form a crust and the flies breed inside the drip.

Early starts are the only way to get this type of job done.

Chemicals can’t be sprayed when staff or customers are in.

Rat Droppings?

November 10, 2014 by MERSEYPEST 34 Comments

A family went on holiday to return to these scattered over the floor. They called us suspecting a rat infestation. The small brown objects are in fact fly pupae. They had forgot to empty the kitchen bin and house fly had bred in the decomposing waste. When the maggots had finished feeding they leave the organic waste in the bin to pupate where it is dry. All that was required on this call was sweeping them outside for the birds.

A call this morning for rats in a kitchen. The house has stood empty for 5 months. The fridge and freezer had been emptied in preparation but they had forgot to empty the kitchen bin. Leaving food in an empty house is a big mistake. It will always attract pests. When I got there however it was not rat droppings scattered across the kitchen floor. It was fly pupae. Flies are similar to butterflies that they lay eggs which hatch into larva (maggots for flies, caterpillars for butterflies). When they are ready to transform into adults they pupate. This is what I found on the kitchen floor. Dozens of fly pupae. The food in the bin had gone off attracted flies, they had laid eggs, the eggs hatched in to maggots. Then the maggots had feasted on the food remains until all had gone then crawled away from the bin to pupate. No insecticide was needed for this call just a brush to brush them outside. The sparrows made a quick meal out of them.

Fly screen’s are very important in protecting food and food preparation areas from flying insects. Flies are a major pest and a huge concern in public health. When screen’s become old, dirty or as in the photo torn they should be replaced. MerseyPest – PestControlLiverpool.co.uk can provide a quote to get screens fixed and extra fly killers installed.
