Crocky Park

April 20, 2014 by MERSEYPEST

Waiting on a job in West Derby at 2pm so have stopped in at Crocky Park. It’s not as busy as I would of thought seeing its bank holiday and the fairs here.

The job I’m waiting on is a return customer from last year. It’s a wasp job. I wonder if it’ll be like yesterday’s misidentification and be mason bees instead.

A call out for wasps yesterday. When I got there the guy took me round the back of the house to show me where his wasps were entering in to breathers above a window. As soon as I saw it I knew it was red mason bee’s. They lay eggs at the bottom of holes in walls. They will then fill it with pollen for the grubs to eat when the egg hatches. They will lay as many eggs as they can depending on the depth of the hole. They often use these window breathers or another common place is where there has been a screw or rawl plug which has been removed leaving the hole. They can cause minor damage to already old walls but are not a major problem. This customer still wanted them removing as they were having a barbeque today. (In the photo you can just see one of the bees in the bottom hole.)

A call this morning for rats in a kitchen. The house has stood empty for 5 months. The fridge and freezer had been emptied in preparation but they had forgot to empty the kitchen bin. Leaving food in an empty house is a big mistake. It will always attract pests. When I got there however it was not rat droppings scattered across the kitchen floor. It was fly pupae. Flies are similar to butterflies that they lay eggs which hatch into larva (maggots for flies, caterpillars for butterflies). When they are ready to transform into adults they pupate. This is what I found on the kitchen floor. Dozens of fly pupae. The food in the bin had gone off attracted flies, they had laid eggs, the eggs hatched in to maggots. Then the maggots had feasted on the food remains until all had gone then crawled away from the bin to pupate. No insecticide was needed for this call just a brush to brush them outside. The sparrows made a quick meal out of them.

Mice in your spuds? Then give us a call on 0151 230 2707. This customer opened her veg draw to find big holes in her spuds. When she lifted the bag out she saw the draw was full of droppings. The mice had been getting up the back of the draws from under the units.
