Mouse Tamper Proof Boxes

November 18, 2014 by MERSEYPEST 28 Comments

Pest Control Liverpool.

We are now moving firmly into the rodent season. The colder nights and less food in the environment are bringing mice and rats scavenging indoors.

This is a photo of tamper resistant mouse boxes with a rodenticide bait inserted on a spike inside each box. Each bait has got a different amount of rodent damage on it, some are almost entirely eaten with only a residue left in the box. This amount of bait eaten indicates much more than just one mouse.

Tamper proof boxes are used to protect children and pets from gaining access to the bait.

Smelly House Thanks to Mouse

November 16, 2014 by MERSEYPEST 4 Comments

Pest Control Liverpool.

A customer called me out yesterday for mice in Liverpool. Over the last few weeks she had found mouse droppings in her kitchen and behind the couch. Now she had noticed a funny smell in the bathroom and decided now was the time to call in pest control.

An inspection of the house revelled droppings in the kitchen, lounge, garage, bathroom and roof void. The smell was coming from behind the bath panel. On removal of the panel hundreds of droppings were found but no signs of anything else.

The house had an access point for under the floor boards on the landing. After pulling back the carpet on the landing a mouse hole was found going under the floor boards.

On removal of the boards a mouse nest was found under pipework and a central heating pump. The nest was made of toilet paper dragged in from the bathroom (the pink debris to the side of the pump).

Looking down under the floor boards I could see the cause of the smell. A dead mouse about 3 metres away (difficult to make out on this photo). The dead mouse and nest were removed and replaced with baits to monitor/control any further mice in the house. All other areas were baited also.

New Rat Burrow

Pest Control Liverpool.

A rat burrow under a doorstep. Rats are now becoming more obvious as food in the environment becomes more restricted. This burrow has been created in the last few weeks and is clearly used daily. A control program is underway to remove them from this property.

Its frustrating on some jobs where mice wont take the rodenticide bait. It is formulated to be as palatable as possible while having a decent shelf life. In this particular call grain bait was put throughout the house and on the follow up it appeared only a small amount of bait had gone even though there was still fresh (well fed) droppings about. The customers said they had put all food that is open in to plastic boxes. So what where the mice eating? A bit of digging about and I found this in a cupboard. A packet of fruit pieces. No wonder the mice wernt taking the bait with a luxury item on offer. With the fruit pieces removed the control treatment will be much more effective.

Liverpool Echo Super Rats

A rat nest in insulation in a roof space just off Sefton Park. Roof voids are a great place for rats to live. They are warm and out of the way but also close to food. They often will just nest in a roof space and leave the house to feed from bird tables or bins. Some unfortunate people however have them living in their roofs and feeding out of their kitchens. Not very pleasant!

Liverpool Echo phoned us on Thursday as they were writing an article on “mutant super rats”. I told them that rats had always been pretty big and that resistance was not huge in Liverpool with rats (but its becoming a major issue with mice). They obviously haven’t printed that as the truth does not sell papers. They have got their “super rat” quote from a guy who runs a pest control company down south but advertises in Liverpool. Pretty standard media reporting. The councils statistics of a rise in call outs for rats to the council pest control is interesting. A hundred extra call outs is a lot but id be more interested seeing statistics over a longer period. See the article here.

Mouse Chewed Dog Food Toxteth

Pest Control Liverpool Mouse Chewed Dog Food

Pest Control Liverpool Mouse Chewed Dog Food

A bag of dog food in a shop that has become the main source of food for hungry mice. This is only one of the bags which has been chewed, plenty more have been damaged. The mice in this shop are resistant to bromadiolone (a type of rodenticide) so alphachlorolose has been used to control them. There are more and more resistant mice out there.
